Garbage People
Garbage people is a TV show I worked on with Shelton. We both are into crafting, DIY and making trash WERK, so we were the team for this project. We had a shopping agreement with a production house to pitch it to major networks, but that kind of fell through, so we were like, let’s just build this ourselves with a $300 budget. Shelton had a connection at Material for the Arts who generously let us shoot there and borrow their trash. Donald Borenstein agreed to shoot it, so we made two short episodes in one shoot day.
We built a set completely out of trash the day of the shoot. The show is like a reality TV show competition (Drag Race, Project Runway, Cut Throat Kitchen.) First we have to spin a wheel to see what exactly we are making, and then we grab how much time we have to make it from a bucket (we don’t always have the same amount of time, so I could have a minute to do a quick craft while Shelton would have 10 mins to make something trashy and luxurious). After that, we craft for our allotted time and the host, Trash Talk, a toy dinosaur, announces who won.
I made a bunch of miniature set furniture pieces out of cardboard, sponges and whatever recycling bin waste I could find in my apartment, and Shelton made a colorful stage backdrop to set it all against.
I just finished the edit for this and I am so happy to share it! We shot everything before the pandemic but I was so stressed out by certain pandemic-adjacent life circumstances that I procrastinated on this one big time! This is the first non music video I edited and considering that all of the acting was improv I did a pretty good job of putting together a cohesive story!
