Feminism and Art
When I first moved to NYC I had a really hard time getting clients. That being said, I was not trying to settle and go back to working in advertising. That kind of work made me absolutely miserable (one of my old coworkers seriously asked me: “if you hate advertising so much why do you even work here”.) I found this social entrepreneur networking group called Be Social Change, and I would go to their happy hours and other events. I met this woman Katie there who told me about her friend Jillian and how she did this monthly feminist discussion roundatables called Bitches who Brunch (later the Hive). I went to a brunch, and met so many feminists doing such meaningful work, and I started to help support them from a design perspective, which was an absolute dream.
Through Jillian I met Rachel (and many others!) Rachel is writer from Australia who wrote a book called “The Sex Myth” and was making a devised play based off the book. She asked me to do the branding for it and I really enjoyed that project so much. If you haven’t read the Sex Myth, I really recommend it. It is all about questioning society norms around sex and making choices based off your own needs and desires — not what others pressure you to do. I am really proud of the work I did for the Sex Myth; it is using what I learned from my earlier collage work but making it more polished.
In 2018 I had the absolute honor to perform at the 25th anniversary for Bust Magazine. If I told myself that I would be sharing the same stage as Erika Badu 10 years ago I would’ve laughed, but it happened! It was a total dream
