Budrus

My friend Jessica Devaney is a producer and a force of nature. When we met she was working on a film Budrus, a 2009 documentary film directed by Julia Bacha and produced by Ronit Avni about non-violent demonstrations conducted by the residents a Palestinian town Budrus who staged an early 2000s protest against the building of the Israeli West Bank barrier inside of the village. I was still working in design agencies, but so desperately wanted to be a freelancer (I love independence.) Jessica knew this, so she offered me the job to brand the whole film so I could kick start my freelancing career. Friends who see your dreams and push you towards them are so valuable.

This was a huge opportunity for me, and a turning point in the trajectory of my design career. It was so great to be able to oversee all the creative details of the branding on my own. Most of the footage I had to work with was archival, so it was lower res. Luckily, since I worked with mostly low-res images with my Informed Revolution project, I had some tricks up my sleeve to make the pixels look like a painted effect, and I was able to blow up a 900px x 1000px image to almost poster size without it looking too bad. I am so grateful for this project that was so key in giving me a professional freelance project to help me move towards what I wanted to do.
