Sugar High Gang

I met my ex M at my art exhibition (or maybe I had met him before, but this was the first time I noticed him for real). He was an artist and a noise musician, and early on in our relationship he invited me to an Ear Pwr show. Sarah (the lead singer) was so fun and confident I turned to him and said, “I want to do that.” Shortly after we started our band The Sugar High Gang.

This was the first time (outside of playing classical music as a child) that I played music and the first time ever that I tried my hand at songwriting. The first song I wrote was called Clap Clap and was a really silly instructional dance song that involved awkward dance moves like jiggling like jello and barking like a basset hound.

Trapper Keeper

We did not take ourselves very seriously at all, and our songs were about relatable topics like spandex pants, using trapper keepers, Smurfs being blue and crafting with paper mache (I have always been obsessed). M would make these lofi beats and play the drums and I would rap and sing (poorly). We always played on the floor instead of the stage, and all of our shows would turn into these silly dance parties. We made a really wild video with Sal Caino for Team Spandex which is just so pop art and fun.

When our relationship ended, the band dissolved but it was so much fun while it was still good. We both were so silly.
